Beezus
thinks that a trip to the library might just be the solution to her
problem. Beezus has read The Littlest Steam Shovel to Ramona
hundreds of times. She is so tired of reading that one book that she
is desperate to find a new book for her little troublemaker sister.
Ramona is not content to let Beezus check out the books for her. She
wants her own card. However, in order for Ramona to have her own library
card, she must be able to write her own name. Ramona is convinced that
can do it. Beezus is not so sure. The librarian, Miss Greever, takes
charge and asks Ramona to write her name on a slip of paper.
Nothing daunted, Ramona grasped
the pencil in her fist and began to write. She bore down so hard that
the tip snapped off the lead, but she wrote on. When she laid down the
pencil, Beezus picked up the card to see what she had written. The line
on the card was filled with:
Miss Greever drops the Ramona's scribbles into the wastebasket.
To cheer up Ramona, Beezus lets Ramona hold her card. Ramona can pretend
that it is hers. Ramona carries her new book, Steve the Steam Shovel,
home happily. Beezus hopes that next time she will pick out a book that
does not even mention steam shovels!
